Bucking the Establishment in Art

Paul Ingbretson is an accomplished professional artist and teacher and a leading modern-day exponent of what became known as the “Boston School” of American art. As a creator and exponent of representative painting that values beauty and meaning, he has been bucking the art-world establishment his entire career.

His background includes several years at the Art Students League of New York with numerous of their top artists. But he ultimately organized his artistic approach around the values associated with the “Boston School” as interpreted by the late R. H. Ives Gammell. Paul is equally adept and successful in portrait, interior, still-life, and landscape painting. He teaches privately in Manchester and Haverhill, New Hampshire and is currently President of the prestigious Guild of Boston Artists....

The Search for Romanticism in Hollywood

Ayn Rand wrote the obituary of literary romanticism in 1965. Nevertheless, romanticism has survived on screen, for Hollywood’s paradox is that romanticist plots perform better at the box-office. Screenwriting teachers and studio executives desperately want more romanticism. However, the desired end-values are not necessarily objectivist. Screenwriter turned novelist Vinay Kolhatkar will take you through the basics of contemporary screenwriting theory and draw parallels with romanticism. After this talk, you may be perpetually walking out of theaters re-plotting the story to make it more inspiring, more intriguing, and more conflict-driven. You could even be on your way to becoming a romanticist fiction writer.

Vinay Kolhatkar studied film and television scriptwriting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, then at ScreenwritingU (Los Angeles), and further at The Story Department, Sydney. His debut novel, The Frankenstein Candidate, was published by Leadstart Publishing.

Dinner Event: Insights on Atlas Shrugged Part III

Atlas Summit attendees will have an unprecedented and exclusive opportunity to view and offer feedback on Atlas Shrugged Part III as it is in the process of final production. It’ll be like sitting in the producer’s chair as you view a full-length preview of Atlas Shrugged Part III.

The producers are interested in the reaction of fans as they prepare the film for public release September 12th.  They know that Atlas Summit attendees can be expected to provide the insight of people who know and love the story of Atlas Shrugged and are eager to see the film succeed.

The centerpiece of the night's events will be a full-length preview of the film, courtesy of the film producers. Not a trailer, not a few scenes, but the full movie in an early screening.

Join us at the Manchester Country Club for a delicious dinner, with a program that will include Associate Producer Scott DeSapio and consultant David Kelley. The speakers will share inside perspectives on the making and meaning of the film.

After dinner, travel with us to the Cinemagic & IMAX Hookset cinema for a screening of the film.

Viewers will be able to enjoy the full sweep and drama of the movie even though in some respects the film will be in draft (some scenes may not be completed, or they may lack the final music and color correction). This will be the earliest complete screening of Atlas Shrugged Part III.

Socratic Seminar: Dagny’s Choice

Strengthen your ability to read Ayn Rand and understand her most complex ideas yourself by attending our Socratic Seminar on this text. Our form of the Socratic Seminar is a learning methodology which, if properly implemented, fosters independence, develops excellent reasoning skills, and nurtures a sense of the rightness of individual liberty. Participation in these seminars significantly increases the participants’ abilities to think for themselves. In this seminar we will examine our understanding of the passage in Atlas Shrugged (Part III, Chapter II: “The Utopia of Greed”) in which Dagny Taggart is wrestling with the decision of whether to join John Galt’s strike or return to work at Taggart Transcontinental. We will seek to learn what Rand means, her evidence for her arguments, how these arguments relate to her other writing, and what implications this passage has for our lives. All participants are expected to have read this passage before the session and to bring a copy with them.

Using Storytelling to Advance Liberty

When Ayn Rand decided to write the definitive statement on her philosophy, she could have used fact-based non-fiction; instead she embraced storytelling. The result of this decision was Atlas Shrugged, which brought Objectivism to the masses in a way policy papers and non-fiction never could have. Moving Picture Institute filmmakers have used this same tactic to change laws, change the culture, win Emmy Awards, break Guinness world records, and appear on the Academy Awards shortlist. Join MPI for an exciting session to learn how opponents of liberty are using storytelling to advance their agenda—and how we can fight back.
