Mastering the Challenges of Life: Living with Grit and Resilience

Happiness is not just a smiley face. Facing the struggles of life with the best we have within us is part of the triumph of a life well lived. Psychological problems are often seen as aberrations; unfortunate and mysterious breakdowns of normal functioning. But the truth is, most, if not all of us struggle with some form of psychological challenge – we may get depressed or sad; we may get anxious or afraid; we may find it hard to engage our self-discipline at times… and we may face these challenges more or less often. These are not necessarily pathologies; they are often a natural part of life. The challenge is to struggle with them effectively, so that they do not become our defining characteristic. In order to face the challenges of life with grit and resilience, we must practice the skills that develop grit and resilience. Many of these skills are also what lead to a truly meaningful, satisfying, and happy life as well. In this talk Joel F. Wade will look at practical tools for developing those skills.
